In 1936 John J. Harty began providing insurance services to his co-workers on the Union Pacific Railroad in Jamestown, North Dakota. This began the tradition of personal service that Harty Insurance continues today. 

John built his business on personal relationships and his dedication to filling the needs for personal and property protection of his friends and clients.

In 1955 John’s son, James (Jim) K. Harty joined his father to make it a family business. The agency continued its growth under Jim’s leadership from their office in downtown Jamestown.

In 1980 Jim’s son, James Harty Jr. joined his father at Harty Insurance. Two years later, his son Thomas became part of the agency. Jim and Tom purchased the agency from their father in 1986. In July of 2000, they expanded their offices to North Jamestown and expanded the business by providing a comprehensive product for group and personal service.
